Jimbaran and The Bukit Peninsula – Bali’s southern belles

in Recreation by

1

While Bali is perhaps best known for its verdant and picturesque rice-terrace landscape, The Bukit Peninsula possesses a very different kind of beauty. Towering limestone cliffs, thick coastal forest, timeless fishing villages and legendary surf breaks typify this rugged lemon-shaped headland marking the island’s most southerly point.

A narrow land bridge separates the sprawling southern plains of Bali from The Bukit, and it’s here that you’ll find the peaceful fishing community of Jimbaran. The wide, gentle curve of Jimbaran Bay is protected by a reef, which creates a calm lagoon of sparkling turquoise water. Safe swimming conditions and beautiful soft white sand make this lovely beach a hit with families. Colourful jukung (traditional fishing boats) rest on the sand, and casual restaurants line the beach. Jimbaran’s nightly seafood barbecues regularly top ‘must do’ lists in Bali. Choose your fish or seafood, then take a table on the beach while it is basted in Jimbaran’s famous spice mix of garlic, black pepper, kaffir lime leaves and chilli, and grilled over coconut husks. Those in search of a finer dining experience and bespoke cocktails can head up to the fabulous beach club, Sundara, tucked into the corner of the bay, while foodies shouldn’t miss Cuca, one of the island’s most innovative restaurants.

Situated on the gentle rise of Jimbaran Hill, with charming views over the bay, (best enjoyed from a roof-top Jacuzzi,) the light and spacious Villa Aiko is well set-up for families. Nearby are two more fabulously equipped villas, each with ocean views and walking tracks down to the beach: Villa Jamalu is equally suited to jetsetters in search of a luxury pad and families looking for a quite holiday retreat, while the popular, highly contemporary Villa Adenium boasts a massive gym and games room.

Further up the hill is the area known as ‘millionaires row,’ an exclusive neighborhood boasting million-dollar views and some of the island’s most exclusive villas. Early mornings reveal central Bali’s dramatic chain of volcanoes, while evenings see the island’s southern plains ablaze with twinkling lights. The Longhouse clings to the mountainside, with a stunning design by renowned Balinese architect Popo Danes, and bedrooms showcasing some of the many rich cultures of the Indonesian archipelago.

Back on the coast, golfers can play a round at the New Kuta Golf Course,

Spilling the Beans: Villa Ramadewa

Elite Havens’ villa chefs share their special recipes

Elite Havens villas are synonymous with superb dining, prepared by skilled chefs – many of whom have trained in internationally renowned restaurants. Villa menus include an extensive range of Western and Asian suggestions, and our chefs will also do their best to cater to guests’ special requests. But of course every chef has his or her own ‘special’ dishes – the ones that guests ask for again and again. With much coaxing and cajoling, we’ve prised some of these secret recipes from our chefs to share with you.

In this issue, Komang, the outstanding chef at Villa Ramadewa on the Laksmana Estate in Seminyak, shares two of his favourite dishes with us.

Villa Ramadewa’s Grilled Lamb Chops with Lemongrass Marinade

Serves 4

INGREDIENTS:

4 double loin lamb chops
Freshly ground black pepper to taste
8 pods fresh green soybean boiled until tender (discard shells)

For the marinade:
2 tsp cumin seeds, lightly toasted
3 inches fresh ginger, chopped
1 ½ inches fresh turmeric, chopped
4 shallots, chopped
4 cloves of garlic, chopped
4 stems of lemongrass, finely sliced
2 tbsp sugar
1 tsp salt
2 tbsp vegetable oil

PREPARATION:

  1. To prepare the marinade, first grind the cumin seeds to a fine powder in a spice grinder. Add all the other ingredients except the oil. Process to a smooth paste adding a little oil if needed to keep the mixture turning.
  2. Heat the oil in a small pan and stir-fry the paste over heat until fragrant and cooked (8 – 10 mins). Transfer to a bowl and leave to cool.
  3. Sprinkle both sides of the lamb chops with a little freshly ground pepper, than rub generously with the marinade. Set aside to marinate for at least 30 minutes. Grill the chops to taste and serve garnished with the cooked soybeans.
  4. In the unlikely event that there is any leftover meat, slice and wrap in pita bread for a delicious lunch snack.

Restaurant Openings: Berawa T-junction in Canggu

11restaurant

The Berawa T-junction in Canggu is sprouting sensational cafes like frangipani trees sprout so many beautiful flowers. Upscale vegan diner Peloton Supershop is the newest and hippest place on the block. This baby delivers an eating experience abundant with deeply satisfying flavours while also being eco-friendly. You can even buy an artisan cycle here to ride off the calories after your meal.

Peloton’s menu includes meat-free ‘tricken’ chicken and replaces traditional fromage with a cashew-based cheese while embracing exotic Arabic flavours with tabouleh and falafel, and Mexican pizazz with tacos packed with walnut meat, veggies and velvety cashew sour cream. There are black charcoal bun burgers and a spin on the classic ‘tricken’ parmigana. The salads are divine and so is the Revolver coffee with coconut milk. Kids love the cheesy pasta crafted from nut milk cheese and tomato. Throw in some herb spiced chips or sweet potato fries rounded off with a chocolate brownie crowned with whipped coconut cream and cinnamon sugar sprinkle and happy times will linger.

The two-level distinctly non-herbal corner cafe is cool inside with a slightly industrial ambiance. It has been such a hit with local ex-pats that a prep kitchen has been set up across the road to produce the delicious treats that are delivered to diners before the kitchen closes at 3.30pm sharp.

Around the corner and down the road is the delightful Quince Café, which is a gorgeous, bright and happy diner hidden behind a little riot of potted plants. Already famous for its delicious Jamu, a local health drink made from turmeric and ginger, its coffee, super fresh juices, house-made muesli and crisp and creative salads. The Vietnamese delicacies such as rice paper rolls are stuffed with fabulously fresh herbs and are a taste sensation.

Talking of Vietnamese, a little farther towards the beach is the new and simple Vietnamese warung Ngon Ngon, which is part of the nearby Warung Heboh and the Piring Daun resto family. Like its sisters, Ngon Ngon dishes up clean flavours that are good, tasty and gratifying. The Pho comes with paper thin beef and clear and fragrant soup plus a generous handful of sprouts, greens and chili. This cheap n’ cheerful spot is no place for fine dining,
