The Savage Kitchen – Bali restaurant review

in Dining by
savage kitchen berawa bali restaurant and bar

Located in Berawa, bridging the gap between the cool Seminyak scene and the hip hangouts in Canggu, Savage Kitchen has the chance to play by their own rules.

By day, Savage is a health-driven café. From breakfast through to dinner, fans of The Savage Kitchen love their anything goes approach. Build your own meals with a list of basic ingredients that can then be piled high with all the things you love.

At night, the air-conditioned space at the back opens up as a neighborhood bar and restaurant that is as much of a hang out as it is a restaurant. The food here plays with more grown up concepts and is morphing into a seriously delicious destination that ticks a lot of boxes for food lovers.

When the crew from The Savage Kitchen were changing things up a little in the back, they added a great long bar and lounge to make the nights in Berawa a little less lonely, with the addition of a great neighborhood hangout.

Sharing is a popular concept here and the dining room is divided into softly lit tables for two or four. On the opposite side of the dining room large sharing tables are where friends and family can sit down to a whole roasted rib of beef, a leg of lamb, a roasted chicken or a fragrant, whole baked Barramundi

The trimmings are laid on for a family-style feast, to pass around, share and enjoy together. This is the beauty of Savage Kitchen; you really can design your own meal and create your own experience.

The Savage BistronomyAll day dining.

From early morning breakfasts feature smoothie bowls and granola with fresh fruit, to full tilt omelettes, smashed avocado plates piled high with roasted tomatoes and poached eggs, to pancakes or slabs of home-made sourdough toast with wild preserves. They got this one covered and the coffee, needless to say, stars!

Lunch is big, from salad bowls to sandwiches, burgers or vegetarian plates piled high with colour, couscous salad or wild rice, pastas and more. Add a little cheese, chicken, pile up some roasted beef or keep it clean and vegan. It’s all about getting what you want. And with an all-day menu, you can rock up anytime.

Which is hotter: Bali’s climate or these Dutch models?

in Wellness by
Dutch models at The Layar

Given the choice to suffer cold weather in Europe or bask in the tropics, famous Dutch footballer Thyson Thijs Bouma and model/photographer Ruben Visser ‘t Hooft opted for an escape to a climate almost as hot as them.

Thijs is known for his Club Football career with FC Twente, VFL Osnabrück, Almere City and De Graafschap, but after breaking his leg in 2015, he decided to see what else the world has to offer. Hello, modelling.

Fast-forward to November 2017 and this hottie still looks like an avid athlete. We caught up with him at The Layar Designer Villas & Spa in Seminyak, Bali.

Tai Hara on Bali and Beaches

in News by
Tai Hara in Bali at Dea Villas in Canggu

How Bali unexpectedly became a very special place for the former Home and Away Heartthrob

Growing up on Australia’s Gold Coast with a love of surfing, it would have been natural for Tai Hara to join the schools of Aussies who habitually take breaks on Bali’s shores, but he had no strong ties to Indonesia (his heritage is Australian-Japanese) and he didn’t want to follow the trend of his fellow surfers.

Tai Hara poses at Seminyak Villa Sayang d'Amour

It wasn’t until 2015, when a friend’s 30th birthday party lured the actor to Bali, that he finally got hooked. It turned out the island was more exotic, welcoming and multi-faceted than he’d ever imagined. One look at his Instagram account and you’ll see the self-proclaimed “frangipani fella” posting plenty of pictures to suggest that he pops over to Bali at the drop of a hat.

‘We’re fortunate it’s so close to home.’ He likens the convenience and respite of short breaks in Bali to his experience whilst filming for Home and Away in Palm Beach, New South Wales, of which he said, ‘It’s so magic. It feels like you’re far away. It’s quite wild to be only an hour away [from Sydney].’

Most days, after acting for the TV series, he would stay at Palm Beach to surf and swim, taking full advantage of the opportunity to escape from ordinary city living. The character of the real Palm Beach is nothing like its depiction as Summer Bay on Home and Away – ‘a lot of drama and action and crime and death. The opposite of what you want at the beach.’

But his most loved beaches are those in Northern New South Wales. ‘Byron Bay, Lennox Head… That whole pocket is home to me. There’s a beautiful light house and a whale migration. It’s where the bush meets the coast in Australia.’

The soft spot he feels for home is irreplaceable, but the avid surfer also seems to enjoy plenty of other beaches all over the world. He and his wife visited their first Atlantic beach in Delaware, USA, by taking romantic walks on the beach, wearing stars and stripes and waving sparklers on 4th of July, and eating beach fries on the boardwalk – an all-American holiday.

Seminyak’s Modern Classic Black & White Villa

in Destinations by
Issi Seminyak Villa Black and White Bedroom

On their home décor website, style authority ELLE has a slideshow of black and white interiors from Manhattan to Brazil, saying “black and white rooms are guaranteed to never go out of style.” The modern kitchens, quaint bathrooms, European farmhouses and Santa Monica celebrity cribs are all “ridiculously fab.” But something is missing.

ELLE’s would-be-perfect presentation of contrasting shiny blacks and beautifully textured whites is a timely one. The persisting colour combo is experiencing a peak in popularity, in case you hadn’t noticed.

Black-and-white is in right now for everything regal; Khloe Kardashian’s living room, runways, red carpets, retail.

VILLA ISSi

Issi Seminyak Villa Black and White BedroomBlack and white interiors are sophisticated and timeless on tropical islands, too.

Many of the private pool villas across Southeast Asia are cause for design envy the world over, and this Seminyak villa, Villa ISSi, well its master bedroom suite should be on ELLE’s list of black and white designer rooms.

Ensuites at Bali’s designer villas are the precedent for open-air bathrooms throughout the tropics and anyone can see why.

The colour motif is strong throughout all four of the spacious bedrooms and the living areas, with only minimal colour accents and patterns in the soft furnishing.

Villa ISSi is art. Designed by internationally acclaimed architect Budi Pradono from Indonesia, the ultramodern Seminyak villa is one-of-a-kind inside and out,
